Hello Wine Friends,
I was blown away by the number of you who wrote in and shared your own wine love story this past week. I seriously had so much fun reading your answers and learning more about you and your very own wine journeys. Thank you for sharing your stories. (And if you missed it and still want to share, the link is here) This helps me understand you better, which is incredible - since you are the whole reason I’m doing this!
My favorite part of reading them was how different all of your origin stories were. Some of you fell in love with wine through travel. Some of you through a love of cooking and gastronomy. For others of you it was because (like me), you found wine to be a way to connect with the people you love.
I wanted to share a few of my favorite responses…
I’ve always loved to travel. It used to be a big part of my work and my wife and I had the opportunity to visit many different countries and cultures. We noticed how big a role wine played in so many places and we always enjoyed discovering the wines native to those places. We would sometimes bring some bottles home with us (if we could fit them!), or try to find that wine back at home as a way to remind us of the memories from that trip. But once we had our daughter, travel unfortunately decreased. Unsurprisingly, the wine consumption increased. Now, we really look at wine as a way to ‘pretend travel.’ We find a bottle from a favorite place and remember how much we loved it. Or we grab a new bottle and have fun learning about where it came from. Wine is our staycation! :)

I’m a foodie and always have been. I worked in kitchens when I was younger and have always appreciated great cooking. And the older I got, the more I understood wine is meant to be enjoyed alongside food. Now I geek out on trying to pair the perfect wine with whatever recipe I’m cooking (or whatever I’m ordering at a restaurant). I’m trying to broaden my horizons and drink more than just Oregon Pinot and Washington Cab and so cooking is a good excuse to do that (because hopefully I’m eating more than just salmon and steak…). So it starts with food for me, and then wine is natural next step of that.

I really resonated with your story. I also got into wine basically because it was around me. My dad always loved wine (Napa Cabs all the way) and he thought of himself as a low-level collector. So I grew up watching him love wine but I never really cared. But when I got older and moved away, I didn’t see him as much or have that much in common anymore. I hadn’t put it together until now, but I definitely used wine as a way to connect back him. It was kind of a common language I guess. I started to learn more about California wine since that’s what he liked but then that kicked my interest into other areas too. Now my dad is gone and it sounds cheesy but I always feel close to him when I open up a bottle.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts! I am seriously humbled by your shares. And as I was reading your responses, I was all the more inspired to create content that truly resonates with you. And the question I kept wondering as I was reading was, “Where do you want to go next?” Meaning, okay, this is the story that brought you to wine and brought you here… but where can I help take you?
For me, my next wine step looks like travel. Now that I’ve spent over a decade learning about all of the incredible wine regions of the world, I want an opportunity to go see them with my own two eyes!
But for you, maybe next looks like defining your palate. Or learning to articulate what you like and don’t like. Or learning how to navigate a wine list. Or learning how to pair wine with food. Or learning how to pick that perfect bottle to bring to a party. Or maybe it is learning about different wine regions and using that to inspire your next travel adventure!
Whatever next looks like for you, I want to know. Because while I’m truly enjoying creating all this content, I want to make sure it’s actually in service to what you’re looking for! I want to be able to tailor it to your curiosities.
And so I’m wondering if you could share one more thing with me (and I promise this is the last newsletter where I’ll ask this!). But that is: what does your next wine step look like?
